The Carlsbad Caverns near Carlsbad, NM. To enter the Caverns you walk down a trail for a mile that drops 800’ into the cave. Then you walk for 1.5 miles through the Big Room. What a wonderful site of stalacitites, stalagmites and columns, where they come together and other formations from over 500,000 years. Since the elevators are out of commission we had to climb the 800’, one mile trail to the surface. Bev’s asthma really got to her. This place is a must see for your bucket list.
If there was no lighting in the Caverns, it would be completely dark. Most of the lighting has been converted to white LEDs to save energy. Because of the large size of the caverns, a flash on a camera would be of no use. If a flash is used on a information panel, the reflection blocks the writing. All of the photos of the information panels was with a handheld camera. It was difficult to hold the camera still to avoid blurring the text on the panel because the lighting on the panel, itself, was still low. In the case of the cave photos, the camera was held tight on the rail of the metal trail fence. Please excuse any photos that are not perfectly clear.
